Tin Cup Colorado
Saw this place on a map and just had to do a recon of the area. Figured it would beat the hell out of a mission in Dum Phuc Province out by the Cambodian border in the Plain of Reeds!
Tin Cup is northeast of Gunnison, about 12 miles from Taylor
Park Reservoir (first pic), and down an old, rutted wagon trail. It's about 2
miles above sea level so the trajectory of a bullet is flatter due to the
thinner air and slightly less gravitational pull. Aim acordingly! It's one of
the coldest places in Colorado as the mean temperature in January is 10 below
zero! Yet Tin Cup is situated at roughly the same latitude as Washington,
D.C. and Sacremento.
Note the old gas pump, no longer operational, at the Tin Cup
General Store. The "cemetary" is south of town and nearly inaccessible. It
consists of 3 distinct areas, the Jewish Knoll, the Catholic Knoll and the
Protestant Knoll. Two recent (2002 and 2004) graves at the Catholic Knoll were
for a couple of WWII Navy veterans. Note the flowers by little Maudie's
headstone. Can any among us expect similar respects more than a hundred years
after we've passed on? The pond with mountains in the background is visible from
the knolls.
Finally, check out the "handyman specials" which can probably be
had for a lot less than California real estate!
All in all a successful mission.
